Checked October 27, 2026. Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page; where a price is not public, we say so. Prices change: re-check before you buy. Dooza Crew is our product. It is not a bookkeeper, so we say where it fits next to the services below, not instead of them.

Bench alternatives: the short answer

For a person who keeps your books: Merritt Bookkeeping ($250 a month, no contracts) or Pilot Essentials ($99 a month). For a dedicated team: Bookkeeper360 (from $400 a month) or Zeni (from $494 a month, billed yearly). For AI-first books you run yourself: Digits (from $65 a month) or Xero (from $27 a month). For the admin around the books (chasing receipts, sorting documents, reminders, phones), our pick is Dooza Crew: free to try, and it asks before it sends anything.

What happened to Bench

Bench shut down without warning in late December 2024. A former customer wrote at the time: "If you were a Bench customer and you hadn’t recently backed up your bookkeeping data, that data might now be gone for good." Employer.com then bought it. In March 2025 TechCrunch reported that some customers said Bench was charging them for work they had already paid for; Employer.com's CMO answered, "We have been, and are honoring pre-paid services for our customers".

Bench is running again. Its pricing page lists Bookkeeping at $399 a month, Bookkeeping Light at $199 a month ("For businesses doing $250K a year or less in revenue.") and Bookkeeping + Tax at $649 a month (checked October 27, 2026). Many former customers now want two things: a copy of their own books they control, and a provider they can leave easily.

The alternatives, one by one

1. Dooza Crew (our product): AI employees for the admin around your books

Bench did two things: it kept the books, and it chased you for what it needed. Crew does not keep books. It takes the second job, and the rest of the back-office busywork. You tell Dooza, your master agent, the job in plain words from the web or your phone; it builds the helper agents it needs and reports back. Each agent has its own computer and browser in a private, isolated workspace. Before it sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject.

  • Example jobs you could give it: check this month's folder for missing receipts and bank statements and draft a reminder to whoever owes them; sort the uploads into one tidy folder for your bookkeeper or CPA; draft polite reminders for overdue invoices for you to approve; fill the fillable PDF, Word or Excel forms you upload; answer your phone and take a message.
  • Phones: Crew agents take phone calls too, included in the plan.
  • Price: free to try, no card needed.
  • Watch for: it is not a bookkeeper or a CPA. No bookkeeping software (such as QuickBooks or Xero) is integrated with it, so it does not sync with your books; it works only in web tools you log in to, and you type passwords and 2FA codes yourself. Pair it with one of the options below.

2. Merritt Bookkeeping: one flat price, no contracts

Merritt's pricing page is short: "$250 per month No pricing tiers No Contracts No hidden fees".

  • Price: $250 a month. Catch-up: if Merritt creates a QuickBooks file for you, it will "bring it up-to-date for $200/mth (20% discount) for each month you are behind" (checked October 27, 2026).
  • Watch for: one plan for everyone, so check what volume of transactions it covers for your business.

3. Pilot: the lowest published price from a large provider

Pilot lists "Essentials $99 /month Up to $100,000 in monthly expenses".

  • Price: Essentials $99 a month (checked October 27, 2026). Higher plans with a dedicated bookkeeper: see the vendor page.
  • Watch for: confirm which plan gives you a named US bookkeeper, if that is what you liked about Bench.

4. Bookkeeper360: a dedicated team, plus cleanup

Bookkeeper360 offers "Monthly & weekly books, done for you. From $400 / month".

  • Price: from $400 a month; prior-period cleanup from $1,000; tax from $1,200 a year (checked October 27, 2026).
  • Watch for: the price is a starting point; plans are custom.

5. Zeni: AI bookkeeping with a finance team, for startups

Zeni's Starter plan is "Starting at $549" a month, or $494 a month billed yearly (checked October 27, 2026).

  • Price: $494 a month billed yearly.
  • Watch for: priced for funded startups; more than Bench Light for a small shop.

6. Digits: AI-first books you run yourself

Digits lists "Essentials ($65/mo), Core ($100/mo), or Pro ($250/mo)" and a 30-day free trial.

  • Price: from $65 a month (checked October 27, 2026).
  • Watch for: it is software; check whether your plan includes a human review before taxes.

7. Xero: the do-it-yourself route

Xero's US plans start at "Then $27 per month" after a discounted first six months; Growing is $59 and Established $97 (checked October 27, 2026).

  • Price: from $27 a month.
  • Watch for: you (or someone you hire) do the bookkeeping. Pair it with a CPA at tax time.

8. Decimal and Paro: custom scope, quote only

Neither lists a price; both ask you to book a call. Worth a quote if you need more than monthly books, such as a fractional controller.

9. Bench itself

If Bench worked for you, it is still there: $199 a month for Bookkeeping Light under $250K revenue, $399 a month for Bookkeeping (checked October 27, 2026). Export a copy of your books every month either way, so you are never locked in again.

How to switch off Bench in one week

  1. Export everything first: financial statements, the general ledger and any tax files, as PDF and CSV.
  2. Pick where the books live: a provider that works in QuickBooks Online or Xero makes the next switch easier, because the file is yours.
  3. Get a cleanup quote: Merritt and Bookkeeper360 publish catch-up prices; compare per month behind.
  4. Hand off the chasing: missing receipts and statements are what slow every bookkeeper down. A Crew agent can check the folder each month and draft the reminders for you to approve.
  5. Have a CPA review before you file.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to Bench Accounting?

Bench shut down abruptly in late December 2024, and Employer.com then acquired it. TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that some customers said they were charged again for work they had already paid for; Employer.com's CMO disputed this, saying "We have been, and are honoring pre-paid services for our customers". Bench is operating again at bench.co.

How much does Bench cost now?

On October 27, 2026, bench.co/pricing listed Bookkeeping at $399 a month, Bookkeeping Light at $199 a month for businesses doing $250K a year or less in revenue, and Bookkeeping + Tax at $649 a month.

What is the best alternative to Bench?

If you want a person to keep your books, Merritt Bookkeeping is $250 a month flat with no contracts, and Pilot Essentials is $99 a month. If you keep your own books in an app like Xero ($27 a month after the intro offer), our pick for the admin around them is Dooza Crew (our product): AI employees that chase receipts, sort documents and draft reminders, free to try, and it asks before it sends anything. It does not do your bookkeeping or taxes.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Bench?

Yes. Pilot Essentials is $99 a month (up to $100,000 in monthly expenses), Digits starts at $65 a month with a 30-day free trial, and Xero starts at $27 a month if you do the books yourself. Merritt is $250 a month for a human bookkeeper.

Can Dooza Crew do my bookkeeping?

No. Dooza Crew is not a bookkeeper or a CPA, and no bookkeeping software (such as QuickBooks or Xero) is integrated with it, so it does not sync with your books. It does the admin around them: chasing missing receipts and statements, sorting files for your accountant, drafting payment reminders for you to approve, filling forms you upload and answering your phone. Pair it with a bookkeeper or an accounting app.

How do I get caught up after leaving Bench?

Get a cleanup quote first. Merritt publishes catch-up pricing of $200 a month for each month you are behind if it builds a new QuickBooks file, and Bookkeeper360 lists cleanup from $1,000. Have a CPA review the books before you file.
