Checked October 26, 2026. Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page. Several tools (Filed, TaxGPT, Drake SmartExtract) do not publish a price; we say so. Prices change: re-check before you buy. Dooza Crew is our product and our top pick for small tax practices; we say why, and where the others fit better.

Best AI tools for tax preparers: the short answer

Our top pick for a small tax practice is Dooza Crew: AI employees that chase client documents, sort what comes in and draft reminders, $49 a month for the whole organization, and it asks before it sends anything. It does not prepare or file returns. For AI that enters data into the return, look at Filed or Drake SmartExtract. For tax research with citations, Blue J or TaxGPT. For practice management with AI built in, TaxDome or Canopy. For call notes, Fathom has a free plan.

How many tax professionals use AI in 2026

The surveys disagree, because they asked different people. Blue J and CPA.com's second annual report, released June 8, 2026, is based on "a survey of more than 1,000 tax professionals across the United States", and it says "60% of respondents now use AI for tax research at least weekly, up from 33% in 2025." Blue J sells a tax research tool, so read it as a vendor survey.

The Thomson Reuters Institute looked at tax firms more broadly: "According to survey respondents, 21% of tax firms identified as already using GenAI technology", "with 53% either planning to use the technology or considering it". One number counts weekly use for research by individuals; the other counts firms that have adopted it. Both say the same thing: a lot of preparers are trying AI, and most practices are still deciding how.

The tools, one by one

1. Dooza Crew (our product, top pick): AI employees for the work around the return

Crew gives a tax practice AI employees, each with its own computer and browser and its own job. The jobs that bury a preparer outside the return itself are a good fit: chasing clients for missing documents, sorting what arrives, drafting reminder emails, answering the phone. The agents work around the clock, work with your team in one chat, and pass work to each other. Before one sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject.

Examples of jobs you could give it: you could give one agent the job of emailing each client a checklist of missing tax documents and drafting a polite reminder for your approval; you could give another the job of filling a fillable PDF, Word or Excel intake or engagement form you upload; and you could give another the job of answering the phone and taking a message when you are with a client. We make no claim about results; these are tasks, not guarantees.

  • Forms: it fills fillable PDF, Word and Excel files you upload. Scanned PDFs without form fields cannot be filled. You type passwords and 2FA codes yourself.
  • Phones: Crew agents take phone calls too, included in the plan.
  • Price: free for 7 days (card required), then $49 a month for the whole organization (unlimited users and agents), AI usage included with a hard spending cap. At the cap it pauses and tells you.
  • Watch for: no tax software (such as Drake, Lacerte or ProConnect) is certified or integrated with it, so it does not sync with your tax software; it works only in web tools you log in to. It is not a licensed tax preparer, CPA or enrolled agent, and it has no IRS e-file. Preparing, reviewing, signing and filing returns, and any tax advice, stay with you.

2. TaxDome: practice management for the whole firm

TaxDome bundles CRM, workflow, a client portal and billing. On the Pro plan you can "Tap into your firm's performance insights with AI-powered reporting".

  • Price (per seat, per year): Essentials $800 (1-year), $750 (2-year), $700 (3-year); Pro $1000, $950, $900; Business $1200, $1150, $1100. "All plans billed upfront." We found no free trial on the page.
  • Watch for: the lower rates need multi-year commitments, and the only AI the pricing page names is reporting on Pro.

3. Canopy: practice management with Smart Tax Prep

Canopy lists Smart Tax Prep, which "Automates tax return preparation with AI-powered document extraction and mapping, powered by Filed and Juno." Its Coworker (Beta) "can do the work (with your permissions)", and there is an AI Notetaker (Beta).

  • Price (per user per month, billed annually): Standard $74, Plus $109, Premium $149 (marked coming soon); Enterprise has no published price. Tax Resolution is "$50 user/month".
  • Free trial: no length stated; you have to schedule a demo with sales to start one.
  • Watch for: the key AI features are in beta, and the AI Notetaker is capped at 8, 12 or 16 hours per user per month on Standard, Plus or Premium.

4. Drake Tax: tax software with an AI data-entry beta

Drake is tax preparation software, and its newest add-on is SmartExtract, which "uses AI technology to extract data from supported tax documents and pre-populate fields for preparer review."

5. Filed: AI return prep and review inside your tax software

Filed says it "reads the binder, extracts every value, and populates the return directly inside your tax software." Its AI Reviewer "cross-checks every figure against the source document." Its pricing page names Drake, CCH, Lacerte and ProConnect.

  • Price: "Custom", based on total taxpayers; you book a demo. No trial is stated, but there is a pilot program.
  • Watch for: sales-led and priced for a whole firm ("one contract covers every preparer"), so a solo preparer should ask what the minimum is.

6. TaxGPT: tax research, prep and return review

TaxGPT offers research with "citation-backed responses", a tax preparation product that works "Inside your existing software", and Agent Andrew for AI return reviews.

  • Price: three plans (Pro, Pro Plus, For Firms), none with a published price: you book a demo. The sign-up section mentions a free trial and "Cancel anytime", with no length stated.
  • Watch for: no public price, and its marketing claims about time saved are the vendor's own, so test it on your own returns.

7. Blue J: AI tax research with citations

Blue J's Individual plan includes "Full US federal and SALT tax coverage" and "Unlimited in-line citations and source lists", and it says it is SOC 2 Type II compliant.

8. Fathom: free AI notes for client calls

Fathom records and transcribes calls, with "instant AI summaries" for each meeting, useful for planning calls and client reviews.

  • Price: Free forever; Team $19 a month per user, or $15 billed annually (2-user minimum); Business $34 a month per user, or $25 billed annually (Fathom pricing).
  • Watch for: it is not built for tax work and has no link to your tax or practice software; get client consent before recording.

9. Smith.ai: call answering and intake

Smith.ai answers calls 24/7, screens and qualifies leads, takes intake and gives you a dedicated number. It is not tax-specific.

  • Price: $300/month for 30 calls; $810/month for 90 calls; $2,100/month for 300 calls; $11.50 per call over 30 on the first plan (Smith.ai pricing).
  • Free trial: none; the page offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, but the same page says a refund applies in the first two weeks, so confirm the terms.
  • Watch for: it is priced per call, which adds up in filing season.

Free AI tools and trials for tax preparers

  • Call notes: Fathom's free forever plan.
  • Trials: Blue J 7 days (no credit card), Dooza Crew 7 days (card required), TaxGPT (free trial, length not stated).
  • By demo or sales only: Canopy, Filed.

How to choose an AI tool as a tax preparer

  1. Start with the job that eats the most hours. Chasing documents, data entry, return review, research or the phones.
  2. Check your tax software first. Filed lists Drake, CCH, Lacerte and ProConnect; Canopy's Smart Tax Prep is built on Filed and Juno; Drake's SmartExtract is only for Drake Tax Online.
  3. Test on last year's returns. Drake itself warns extracted data may be wrong, so compare the output against the source documents before trusting it.
  4. Keep sign-off human. Pick tools that ask before they send, and keep preparing, reviewing, signing, filing and advice with you.
  5. Check data handling. Ask each vendor how client data is stored and who can see it, and write it into your information security plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI tool for tax preparers?

For a small tax practice that needs help with the work around the return, our top pick is Dooza Crew (our product): AI employees for jobs such as chasing client documents and drafting reminders, each with its own computer and browser, for $49 a month for the whole organization after a 7-day free trial. It asks before it sends anything. For AI that enters data into the return, look at Filed or Drake SmartExtract; for tax research with citations, Blue J or TaxGPT; for practice management, TaxDome or Canopy.

Can AI prepare tax returns?

Some tools fill in parts of a return. Filed says it reads the client binder and populates the return inside your tax software, and Canopy lists Smart Tax Prep. Drake SmartExtract pre-populates fields from supported documents but is a limited beta. In every case the preparer reviews and signs. Dooza Crew does not prepare or file returns: it is not a licensed tax preparer, CPA or enrolled agent, and filings and tax advice stay with you.

Does Dooza Crew e-file returns or connect to tax software?

No. Crew has no IRS e-file or tax-software integration, and no tax software is certified or integrated with it. It works only in web tools you log in to with a browser, so it does not sync with your tax software. Filing and tax advice stay with you.

How many tax professionals use AI?

It depends on the survey. A Blue J and CPA.com survey of more than 1,000 US tax professionals, released June 8, 2026, found 60% use AI for tax research at least weekly, up from 33% in 2025. Blue J sells a tax research tool. The Thomson Reuters Institute found 21% of tax firms already using generative AI, with 53% planning to or considering it.

Is there a free AI tool for tax preparers?

Fathom has a free forever plan for call notes. For trials: Blue J 7 days with no credit card, Dooza Crew 7 days (card required), and TaxGPT lists a free trial without a stated length. Drake SmartExtract is a limited beta for selected Drake Tax Online customers, and its price is not published.

Is it safe to put client tax data into an AI tool?

Check before you upload. Blue J says it is SOC 2 Type II compliant, but most pages here say little about how client data is handled. Ask each vendor, read your written information security plan, and decide which tools are approved for client data. Dooza Crew asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject before it sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, and you type passwords and 2FA codes yourself.
