Checked October 26, 2026. Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page. Procore does not publish a price, Jobber's price page was blocked to us, Knowify's page was read with a fetch tool only, and Buildertrend and Contractor Foreman blocked our reads; we say so. Prices change: re-check before you buy. Dooza Crew is our product and our top pick for small contractors; we say why, and where the others fit better.

Best AI tools for contractors: the short answer

Our top pick for a small contractor is Dooza Crew: AI employees that answer calls, chase open bids and draft the follow-up emails you never get to, $49 a month for the whole organization, and it asks before it sends anything. For construction management with built-in AI, look at JobTread. For takeoffs, Togal.AI. For plan review, Bluebeam Max. For big commercial projects, Procore. For an AI receptionist, Jobber or Housecall Pro. For call notes, Fathom has a free plan.

How many contractors use AI in 2026

Most of the industry says it has started. The Sage and AGC 2026 outlook reports: "Sixty-one percent of firms now report either currently using AI or planning to increase AI investments this year." It adds that this is a jump from 44 percent in the previous year's survey.

Houzz's 2026 State of AI report, based on "a survey of 601 U.S. construction and design businesses", puts it at "More than half of firms (52%) now use AI for everyday business tasks, up 20 percentage points from a year ago" for construction, with 80% of construction firms that use AI doing so daily.

Houzz sells software to this market and "using AI" is defined loosely in both surveys, so read them as direction, not a census. They do show the shift: the question is no longer whether to try AI but which job to give it. The tools below cover estimating, field paperwork and the office.

The tools, one by one

1. Dooza Crew (our product, top pick): AI employees for the contractor's office

Most small contractors lose time and jobs in the gaps: a call missed on a roof, a bid that never got a follow-up, a form sitting in the truck. Crew gives your company AI employees, each with its own computer and browser and its own job. They work around the clock, work with your team in one chat, and pass work to each other. Before one sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject.

Example jobs you could give it: you could give one agent the job of answering the phone and taking a message for every new lead; another the job of drafting a polite follow-up to every bid that has gone quiet; another the job of filling a fillable PDF or Excel form you upload, such as a subcontractor info sheet or a material list. Crew works in web-based tools you log in to with a browser, and you type passwords and 2FA codes yourself.

  • Forms: it fills fillable PDF, Word and Excel files you upload. Scanned PDFs without form fields cannot be filled.
  • Phones: Crew agents take phone calls too, included in the plan.
  • Price: free for 7 days (card required), then $49 a month for the whole organization (unlimited users and agents), AI usage included with a hard spending cap. At the cap it pauses and tells you.
  • Watch for: no construction software (JobTread, Procore, Buildertrend or any other) is certified or integrated with it, so it does not sync with your project system; it works only in web tools you log in to. It is not a licensed estimator or engineer: bids, permits and safety decisions stay with you.

Try Dooza Crew free for 7 days.

2. JobTread: construction management with built-in AI

JobTread covers estimating, budgets, job costing, change orders and customer portals. Its AI page lists "AI Estimating" (draft detailed budgets in minutes), an AI Form Builder, and AI Plan Import and Count Tools.

3. Togal.AI: AI takeoff from plans

Togal.AI reads plan sheets and produces quantities. Its Growth plan lists "Unlimited automated takeoffs", unlimited chat prompts and unlimited image and symbol searches.

  • Price: Growth "$ 299 / mo per user, billed yearly"; Business is custom for teams of 4 or more users.
  • Free trial: the page says to hit "Try Now" and book your demo; no trial length is stated.
  • Watch for: it does takeoff only. You still check the quantities and price the job.

4. Procore: AI agents for bigger commercial jobs

Procore is project management for larger builds. Its AI page names a Daily Log Agent ("Turn field photos, emails, video, and voice into completed daily logs."), an RFI Agent, a Submittal Review Agent and a Deep Search Agent, and says "Agents do the data gathering and drafting, your team makes the final call."

  • Price: not published (request a demo).
  • Free trial: none; demo only.
  • Watch for: it is built for commercial project teams, so it may be more than a four-person remodeling crew needs.

5. Knowify: job costing and billing for subcontractors

Knowify lets you "Bid, execute, and invoice for fixed-price and AIA jobs while managing your team." Its Advanced plan includes an AI Connector to link Claude and ChatGPT to your business data. We could read this page with a fetch tool only, so treat the figures as unconfirmed.

  • Price: Core shows $99 / month and $149 / month (the page does not say which is yearly); Advanced shows $329 / month and $399 / month; each additional user is $29/month.
  • Free trial: a "Start your free trial" button; length not stated.
  • Watch for: the AI Connector is on Advanced and above only, and the price labels are unclear.

6. Bluebeam: plan markup with AI drawing review in Max

Bluebeam is the PDF markup tool many estimators and project managers already use. Its Max plan lists "AI drawing reviews" and AI drawing comparisons.

  • Price: Basics $260 per user, billed annually; Core $330; Complete $440; Max "$590 Per user, billed annually", shown as an introductory price.
  • Free trial: a Free Trial button; length not read.
  • Watch for: the AI is only in the top tier, and AI plan review does not replace checking drawings against code.

7. Housecall Pro: field service software with AI add-ons

Housecall Pro handles scheduling, dispatch and invoicing for service trades. Its pricing page promises "AI team members to automate your work" and an add-on: "AI answers every call and chat, day or night so you schedule stays full."

8. Jobber: an AI Receptionist for service-call work

Jobber is service business software. Its AI Receptionist page says "Receptionist answers calls and texts 24/7, books visits, takes requests, and escalates to you when needed".

  • Price: not readable. Its pricing page blocked our read and the Receptionist page shows no dollar figure, so ask Jobber.
  • Free trial: a Start Free Trial button; length not stated.
  • Watch for: it is built for service work such as repairs and maintenance, not for bidding.

9. Fathom: free AI notes for calls

Fathom records and transcribes video calls with "Instant AI call summaries". Useful for owner calls, subcontractor coordination and client walk-through calls held on video.

  • Price: "Free forever" plan; Premium shows $20 and $16 per user per month (the page does not label which is annual), so budget from $16.
  • Watch for: it covers video meetings, not phone calls from the job site, and it does not put notes into your project software.

10. Smith.ai: call answering and intake

Smith.ai answers calls and takes messages and intake for small businesses. It is not construction-specific.

Free AI tools and trials for contractors

  • Call notes: Fathom's free forever plan.
  • Trials: Housecall Pro 14 days (no credit card), Dooza Crew 7 days (card required). JobTread offers no free trial.
  • Money-back: Smith.ai, 30 days.

How to choose an AI tool for your construction business

  1. Start with the leak. Missed calls, bids that go quiet, takeoffs that take a weekend, or paperwork. Pick the one that costs you the most jobs.
  2. Check your project software first. If you already pay for JobTread, Procore or Knowify, ask what AI is built in before buying a second tool. Dooza Crew and the call tools do not integrate with them.
  3. Count users and calls. JobTread and Togal.AI charge per user, Smith.ai per call; Dooza Crew is a flat monthly price for the whole organization.
  4. Keep sign-off human. Pick tools that ask before they send, and keep bids, permits and safety decisions with you.
  5. Test on one job type for a week before you route every call or bid through a bot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI tool for contractors?

For a small general contractor or remodeler, our top pick is Dooza Crew (our product): AI employees for the office work that eats your evenings, such as answering the phone, drafting follow-ups to open bids and filling forms, each with its own computer and browser, for $49 a month for the whole organization after a 7-day free trial. It asks before it sends anything. For construction management with built-in AI estimating, look at JobTread; for takeoffs, Togal.AI; for plan review, Bluebeam Max.

How many contractors use AI?

A majority by two 2026 reports. The Sage and AGC outlook says 61 percent of firms either currently use AI or plan to increase AI investments this year, up from 44 percent the year before. Houzz's 2026 State of AI report, based on a survey of 601 U.S. construction and design businesses, says more than half of firms (52%) now use AI for everyday business tasks, up 20 percentage points from a year ago. Houzz sells software to this market, so treat it as one data point.

Can AI do my takeoffs and estimates?

It can speed them up. Togal.AI automates takeoffs from plans at $299 a month per user, billed yearly, and JobTread lists AI Estimating that drafts budgets. You still check the quantities, pricing and scope. Dooza Crew is not a licensed estimator or engineer and does not do takeoffs; bids, permits and safety decisions stay with you.

Is there an AI receptionist for contractors?

Yes. Jobber has an AI Receptionist that answers calls and texts 24/7 and books visits, with no price shown on the page we read. Housecall Pro lists an AI add-on that answers every call and chat, with no price listed. Smith.ai answers calls from $300 a month for 30 calls. Dooza Crew agents also take phone calls, included in the $49 plan.

Can an AI agent send bids or contracts for me?

With Dooza Crew, an agent can draft an email or fill a fillable PDF, Word or Excel file you upload, but before it sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject. It is not a licensed estimator or engineer, and no construction software is certified or integrated with it, so you review every price, scope line and permit-related document.

Is there a free AI tool for contractors?

Fathom has a free forever plan for call notes, and Housecall Pro offers 14 days free with no credit card. JobTread says it does not offer a free trial. Dooza Crew is free for 7 days (card required).
