Checked October 26, 2026. Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page. Some AI add-ons do not publish a price, and we say so. Prices change: re-check before you buy. Dooza Crew is our product and our top pick for small painting companies; we say why, and where the others fit better.
Best AI tools for painters: the short answer
Our top pick for a small painting company is Dooza Crew: AI employees that answer calls, draft estimate follow-ups and chase quotes that went quiet, $49 a month for the whole organization, and they ask before they send anything. If you want AI inside job software, check Jobber (Receptionist add-on) and DripJobs (Jobi AI) first. For estimating from your own production rates, PaintScout. For a stand-alone phone line, Goodcall. For workflows between your apps, Zapier.
What we could not find on painter AI adoption
We looked for a primary survey of painting contractors on AI use and did not find one we could verify, so we are not quoting any number. What the vendors say is clear enough: AI is arriving as add-ons inside the tools painters already use. Jobber says its Receptionist "Never leave a call or text unanswered again." DripJobs says "Jobi AI analyzes every deal — notes, texts, conversation history — and writes the perfect follow-up or project update for you." Housecall Pro says its CSR AI "Answers calls and books jobs 24/7 so you never miss an opportunity." Those are vendor claims, not results.
For a painting contractor the useful split is three jobs: the phone and inbox (new enquiries while you are up a ladder), the estimate and follow-up (the quote that never got an answer), and the paperwork (proposals, change orders, invoices). The tools below cover those.

1. Dooza Crew (our product, top pick): AI employees for the painter's phone and inbox
Most painting companies run on an owner who is on a job site all day, and the work that eats the evening is not the painting: it is the enquiry that came in at 2pm, the estimate nobody followed up, the form that needs filling for the supplier. Crew gives your company AI employees, each with its own computer and browser and its own job. They work around the clock, work with your team in one chat, and pass work to each other. Before one sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject.
Example jobs you could give it: you could give one agent the job of answering the phone and taking a message for every new enquiry; another the job of drafting a follow-up email to every estimate that has gone quiet, for you to approve; another the job of drafting a review request after a finished job; another the job of filling a fillable PDF or Excel form you upload, such as a supplier account application. Crew works in web-based tools you log in to with a browser, and you type passwords and 2FA codes yourself.
- Forms: it fills fillable PDF, Word and Excel files you upload. Scanned PDFs without form fields cannot be filled.
- Phones: Crew agents take phone calls too, included in the plan.
- Price: free for 7 days (card required), then $49 a month for the whole organization (unlimited users and agents), AI usage included with a hard spending cap. At the cap it pauses and tells you.
- Watch for: no painting software (such as PaintScout, Jobber or DripJobs) is certified or integrated with it, so it does not sync with your estimating system; it works only in web tools you log in to. It is not a licensed contractor: estimates and safety decisions stay with you, and it asks before Send, Submit or Pay.

2. Jobber: field-service software with an AI Receptionist add-on
Jobber is job-management software for home-service businesses. Its pricing page lists a Jobber AI add-on called Receptionist: "Never leave a call or text unanswered again. When you're busy on a job, enjoying personal time, or your admin is focused on other work, Receptionist is there..."
- Price: Core "$49/mo", Connect $139 a month and Grow $199 a month for one user on monthly billing, with introductory discounts and cheaper annual rates shown. Receptionist is "$29" a month on top.
- Free trial: "Try jobber for free now. Pick a plan later." with "No credit card required."
- Watch for: Receptionist is an add-on, not included, and the page is script-driven, so check the live price. We read it in a browser, not as plain text.
3. DripJobs: a painter-focused CRM with Jobi AI
DripJobs is a CRM built for contractors, with painting named on its estimating add-on: "Industry-specific production rate estimating for painting, pressure washing, and other trades." Its AI is Jobi AI: "It reads deal context, scores leads, and writes personalized follow-up messages you send with one click."
- Price: Pro "$97 /month"; Advanced $147 a month. Add-ons: Production Rates $99 a month, Job Costing $49 a month, DripJobs Chat $25 a month. Jobi AI is listed as "Contact for pricing".
- Free trial: "No — we don't offer a free trial."
- Watch for: the AI add-on has no published price, and there is no trial.
4. PaintScout: painting estimates and proposals (no AI found)
PaintScout is estimating and proposal software for painters. Its pricing page lists "Production rates & material lists" and "Estimating & Proposals". We found no AI feature on the pricing or home page text we read, and a web search found none, so we list it as the estimating tool many painters compare against, not as an AI tool.
5. Housecall Pro: home-service software with CSR AI
Housecall Pro is job and customer software for home-service trades. Its AI Team page says CSR AI "Answers calls and books jobs 24/7 so you never miss an opportunity."
6. Goodcall: AI phone answering with a free demo agent
Goodcall builds an AI agent for your business line. Its pricing page says "Start free with a demo agent. Add a number when you're ready."
- Price: "Starter $79 a month" (100 unique customers a month, then 79¢ each), Growth $129 and Scale $299 a month.
- Free trial: a free demo agent; you pay when you connect a number.
- Watch for: billing is per unique caller, so a busy spring costs more, and it does not connect to your estimating software.
7. Smith.ai: call answering with real people, AI-first or hybrid
Smith.ai sells "Professional call answering by real people" around the clock, with AI-first, hybrid and human-first options.
8. Fathom: free AI notes for client and crew calls
Fathom records and summarizes video calls. Its free plan has "Unlimited recordings, instant call summaries, integrations with LLMs & more." Useful for color-consultation calls, supplier meetings and crew check-ins held on video.
- Price: "Free forever." Team shows $19 and $15 per user per month (the page does not label which is annual), with a 2-user minimum, so budget from $15.
- Free trial: paid plans have a free trial and a 90-day guarantee.
- Watch for: video calls only: not for walkthroughs at the property and not for the phone line.
9. Zapier: AI automation between the apps you already use
Zapier connects your apps with automated workflows. Its free plan is described as "Start automating with AI. Zaps, Tables, and Forms included (100 tasks per month)." A painter might use it to move a new enquiry from a web form into a spreadsheet and send a notification.
- Price: "Free forever $0 /month"; Professional "Starting from $19.99 /month"; Team starting from $69 a month.
- Free trial: paid plans say "Try it free"; the length was not in the text we read.
- Watch for: you build and maintain the workflows yourself, and usage is billed in tasks, with 100 a month on the free plan.
Free AI tools and trials for painters
- Automation: Zapier's free forever plan (100 tasks a month).
- Call notes: Fathom's free forever plan.
- AI phone line: Goodcall's free demo agent, until you connect a number.
- Trials: PaintScout 14 days, Housecall Pro 14 days, Jobber (no credit card), Dooza Crew 7 days (card required). DripJobs says it has no free trial.
How to choose an AI tool for your painting business
- Start with the biggest time sink. The phone, the unanswered quotes, the paperwork or the estimates. Pick the one that costs you the most evenings.
- Check your job software first. If you already pay for Jobber, DripJobs or Housecall Pro, ask what AI is built in before buying a second tool. Dooza Crew and the phone tools do not integrate with them.
- Count callers and seats. Goodcall is priced per unique caller, Smith.ai per call, Jobber and PaintScout per user; Dooza Crew is a flat monthly price for the whole organization.
- Keep the decisions human. Estimates, scope and safety calls should be yours. Pick tools that ask before they send or pay.
- Test on one workflow for a season before you route every enquiry through a bot.
