Checked October 26, 2026. Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page. Passare, Gather, Osiris and FrontRunner do not publish prices; we say so. Prices change: re-check before you buy. Dooza Crew is our product and our top pick for the office work around a funeral home; we say why, and where the funeral software vendors fit better.

Best AI tools for funeral homes: the short answer

Our top pick for the office work of a small funeral home is Dooza Crew: AI employees for the jobs that pile up after hours, such as drafting follow-up emails, checking supplier prices and filling forms, $49 a month for the whole organization, and it asks before it sends anything. If you want AI inside your case software, Passare and Gather both offer an AI obituary writer, and Passare adds a notetaker; neither publishes a price. For answering calls, FuneralWiseAI shows a $995 setup and $195 a month, Smith.ai has a free plan, and Goodcall starts at $79 a month.

Who this list is for

This list is for small and independent funeral homes, often a director or a family running arrangements, services, paperwork and the phone at once. Funeral work is personal, and no tool here replaces the director. Passare puts it plainly on its own AI page: "Your compassion can’t be automated. Your paperwork? Different story." That is the line we use too: AI for paperwork, drafts, notes and the phone, with a person for the family.

We looked for a primary survey of AI use in funeral homes, from an association or a regulator, and did not find one, so we quote no adoption percentage. What we did find is a market with funeral-specific software that has added AI, a few AI answering services built for funeral homes, and general tools that any small office can use. The tools below fall into three groups: funeral software with AI features, AI that answers the phone, and AI that does office work in your browser. Of the four funeral software vendors, only Passare and Gather name AI features on the pages we read.

The tools, one by one

1. Dooza Crew (our product, top pick): AI employees for the office work

Crew gives a funeral home AI employees, each with its own computer and browser and its own job. They work around the clock, work with your team in one chat, and pass work to each other. They work in the web-based tools you log in to with a browser, and Crew agents take phone calls too, included in the plan. Before an agent sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject.

Some jobs you could give it:

  • Follow-up: you could give one agent the job of drafting thank-you and check-in emails to families for you to approve before anything is sent.
  • Supplies: you could give one agent the job of checking prices for supplies on your supplier websites and building the order, then waiting for you to approve before it clicks Pay.
  • Forms: you could give one agent the job of filling the fillable PDF, Word and Excel forms you upload, such as a vendor application or an insurance form. Scanned PDFs without form fields cannot be filled. You type passwords and 2FA codes yourself.
  • Calls: you could give one agent the job of answering the phone, taking the caller's name and number and a short message, and posting it to your team chat.
  • Price: free for 7 days (card required), then $49 a month for the whole organization (unlimited users and agents), AI usage included with a hard spending cap. At the cap it pauses and tells you.
  • Watch for: it is not a funeral director, and arrangements and legal or regulated decisions stay with you. No funeral home software (Passare, Gather, Osiris, FrontRunner) is certified or integrated with it, so it does not sync with your case management system; it works only in web tools you log in to. Test yours during the trial.

2. Passare: funeral software with the most AI tools we found

Passare's AI page lists five tools. The AI Obituary Writer: "With our AI Writer, you can get a first draft in seconds." The AI Scanner reads handwritten forms: "snap a picture of your vitals sheet, and the data uploads to Passare." The AI Notetaker "records, transcribes, and summarizes your entire meeting." AI Suggestions then turns the notes into case updates, with "Review, approve, and save time with a click." The home page adds that Passare "integrates with 40+ tools and partners you already use".

  • Price: not published. The pages we read show no dollar amount and offer a demo.
  • Watch for: the AI lives inside Passare, so it is a reason to choose the whole system, not an add-on for another one. Ask for the price of the AI tools in writing.

3. Gather: funeral software with an AI Obituary Builder

Gather's homepage describes "The funeral home software built to help you get more time back in your day" and lists case management with "unlimited support, cases, and users". Its AI Obituary Builder page calls itself "The World's First Fully-Integrated A.I. Obituary Builder" and claims "Instead of spending 3-4 hours to create a meaningful obituary, you only need 5 minutes." (that time saving is Gather's claim, not ours).

4. Osiris: management software, no AI named

Osiris describes its funeral home product as "Schedule services, collaborate with families while on the move, arrange meetings, track sales, report on financials and volume statistics and more with Osiris." We found no AI feature on the home or pricing page, so treat it as a management system first.

5. FrontRunner: all-in-one system, no AI named

FrontRunner's site says "With our easy to use, all in one system, you can run your entire funeral home from one place." The home page did not mention AI features when we read it.

6. FuneralWiseAI: AI answering built for funeral homes

FuneralWiseAI is "An AI answering service trained for funeral homes" that "picks up every time, captures what you need, and pages you only when it matters." It runs on your existing number: "Your existing number, no forwarding complexity." You can hear it before you talk to anyone: "Dial our demo line, enter the code, and listen to our AI receptionist handle a typical inbound call for a fictional funeral home."

  • Price: one-time setup $995, then $195 a month with unlimited calls, call summaries and a dashboard (FuneralWiseAI pricing). The page also says "30-day satisfaction guarantee. Cancel anytime."
  • Watch for: a young single-founder product with no independent reviews that we saw, and a setup fee up front. Run the demo line and test calls first.

7. Smith.ai AI Receptionist: a free plan to start

Smith.ai's AI Receptionist answers calls 24/7, with a free plan headed "Try it and trust it first."

  • Price: Free $0 a month for 25 calls ($3.00 per call after that); Pro $150 a month ($2.00 per call) (Smith.ai AI Receptionist pricing).
  • Watch for: a general small-business tool with no funeral-specific script that we could confirm. You write what it says and what it never says.

8. Goodcall: pay per caller, not per minute

Goodcall bills by unique customer: "No. We never meter minutes."

  • Price: Starter $79 a month (100 unique customers); Growth $129 a month; Scale $299 (Goodcall pricing).
  • Trial: "Start free with a demo agent."
  • Watch for: the count is different people who call, and a death can bring calls from many relatives; check where that leaves your plan.

9. Otter: meeting notes

Otter records and transcribes meetings on Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. Its pricing page lists a Basic plan that is Free with "300 monthly transcription minutes"; the Pro plan is paid, so read the current price on the page.

  • Watch for: it is a general cloud service. Do not record an arrangement conference without the family's consent and your own written policy; Passare's Notetaker is the in-software alternative if you already use Passare.

Free AI tools and trials for funeral homes

  • Free plans: Smith.ai AI Receptionist (25 calls a month for $0) and Otter Basic.
  • Trials: Osiris 30 days, Dooza Crew 7 days (card required), Gather a free trial of its AI Obituary Builder (length not stated), Goodcall a free demo agent, FuneralWiseAI a demo phone line.
  • Demo or quote only: Passare, FrontRunner.

Trust and checking the work

A family forgives a slow reply more readily than a wrong name or date. Read every AI-drafted obituary, program and email aloud before it goes out, check names, dates, relationships and spellings against your case file, and never let a draft go to a family unreviewed. Before you route your phone to any AI, run test calls at night, including a caller in tears, decide what it may never say, such as prices or a promise about timing, and make sure an urgent first call reaches a person. Keep arrangements, legal paperwork and any regulated decision with a licensed person. With Dooza Crew, agents ask you to Approve, Edit or Reject before they send an email or click Send, Submit or Pay, which keeps you the last stop on anything that leaves the building.

How to choose an AI tool for your funeral home

  1. Start with the job that costs you most. Missed night calls, obituary drafting, meeting notes, or the paperwork that waits until after hours.
  2. Check your case software first. If you already run Passare, Gather, Osiris or FrontRunner, see what AI it includes before you add another tool.
  3. Do the math your way. FuneralWiseAI is a setup fee plus a monthly price, Goodcall is per unique caller, Smith.ai is per call, Dooza Crew is one price for the organization.
  4. Keep the family and the decisions with people. AI can draft, transcribe, fill forms and take a message; arrangements and regulated decisions stay with you.
  5. Test before you switch. Use the free plan or trial and real calls for a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI tool for a small funeral home?

For the office work around the funeral home, our top pick is Dooza Crew (our product): AI employees with their own computer and browser for jobs such as drafting follow-up emails, checking supplier prices and filling forms, $49 a month for the whole organization after a 7-day free trial, and it asks before it sends anything. For AI inside the system that runs your cases, look at Passare and Gather. For after-hours calls, look at FuneralWiseAI, Smith.ai or Goodcall.

Can AI answer the phone at a funeral home at night?

AI call answering tools pick up around the clock, take a message and send you a summary. FuneralWiseAI is built for funeral homes and says it uses your existing number; Smith.ai and Goodcall are general AI receptionists. A family calling at 2 a.m. is in distress, so test with real calls, decide what the AI may never say, and make sure a person gets the urgent ones.

How much do AI tools for funeral homes cost?

Prices we read on October 26, 2026: FuneralWiseAI shows a one-time setup of $995 and $195 a month; Smith.ai has a $0 plan for 25 calls a month and Pro at $150 a month; Goodcall starts at $79 a month for 100 unique customers; Otter has a free plan. Passare, Gather, Osiris and FrontRunner do not publish prices. Dooza Crew is $49 a month for the whole organization.

Does Dooza Crew work with Passare, Gather, Osiris or FrontRunner?

No. We claim no integration with any funeral home software, and none is certified. Crew agents work in web-based tools you log in to with a browser, so ask in the free trial whether your system works that way. Crew is not a funeral director: arrangements, legal paperwork and other regulated decisions stay with you.

Is there a free AI obituary writer for funeral homes?

Gather lists "Activate Free Trial" and "Try for Free" on its AI Obituary Builder page, without stating the trial length. Passare includes an AI Obituary Writer in its AI tools but does not publish a price. Either way, read every obituary with the family before it is published.

Is it appropriate for a funeral home to use AI?

It is a judgment call for each home. The tools on this list handle paperwork, notes, first drafts and calls; a person should handle the family. Passare itself frames it as "Your compassion can't be automated. Your paperwork? Different story." We found no primary industry survey of funeral home AI adoption, so we do not quote an adoption percentage.
