Checked October 26, 2026. Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page. Pearl, Overjet, Bola AI and Arini do not publish prices; we say so. Prices change: re-check before you buy. Dooza Crew is our product and our top pick for the back office of a small dental practice; we say why, and where the dental-specific tools fit better.

Best AI tools for dentists: the short answer

Our top pick for a small dental practice is Dooza Crew: AI employees for the office jobs nobody has time for, such as hiring, supply ordering and filling forms, $49 a month for the whole organization, and it asks before it sends anything. For AI x-ray analysis, look at Pearl or Overjet, or Open Dental's AI Image Analysis if you already run Open Dental. For notes and hands-free perio charting, Denti.AI or Bola AI. For the phones, Arini is an AI receptionist built for dentists; Smith.ai has a free AI receptionist plan and Dialzara starts at $29 a month. Weave bundles phones, texting and AI call insights.

Who this list is for

This list is for independent dentists and practices with one to five locations, not large groups. That is still most of dentistry. The American Dental Association's Health Policy Institute reports that "As of 2023, less than three-fourths of U.S. dentists (72.5%) are private practice owners, down from 84.7% in 2005." It also says "As of 2024, more than one in ten dentists (16%) in the U.S. are affiliated with a dental support organization (DSO)."

A DSO has a central team for phones, billing, hiring and IT. An owner-dentist usually has a front desk of one or two people doing all of it between patients. The tools below fall into four groups: clinical AI that reads x-rays, AI that writes notes and charts by voice, AI that answers the phone, and AI that does office work in your browser.

The tools, one by one

1. Dooza Crew (our product, top pick): AI employees for the practice's back office

Crew gives a dental practice AI employees, each with its own computer and browser and its own job. They work around the clock, work with your team in one chat, and pass work to each other. They work in the web-based tools you log in to with a browser, and Crew agents take phone calls too, included in the plan. Before an agent sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject.

Some jobs you could give it, chosen so that no patient health information is involved:

  • Hiring: you could give one agent the job of posting your hygienist or assistant opening on job sites, sorting the replies and drafting answers to applicants for you to approve.
  • Supplies: you could give one agent the job of checking prices for your usual supplies on your suppliers' websites and building the order, then waiting for you to approve before it clicks Pay.
  • Forms: you could give one agent the job of filling the fillable PDF, Word and Excel forms you upload, such as an insurance network application or a vendor form. Scanned PDFs without form fields cannot be filled. You type passwords and 2FA codes yourself.
  • Reviews and email: you could give one agent the job of drafting replies to public reviews and routine vendor email, without patient details, for you to approve.
  • Price: free for 7 days (card required), then $49 a month for the whole organization (unlimited users and agents), AI usage included with a hard spending cap. At the cap it pauses and tells you.
  • Watch for: it is not a dentist or a clinical tool, and it does not diagnose. No dental practice software is certified or integrated, so it works only where you can log in with a browser; test yours during the trial. We make no HIPAA or Business Associate Agreement claim for Crew, so do not give it patient health information (PHI) unless your compliance review allows it. Clinical and other regulated decisions stay with you.

2. Pearl: AI x-ray analysis (Second Opinion)

Pearl's Second Opinion is built to "Detect pathologies in x-rays using AI for improved diagnostic accuracy." Pearl also sells Practice Intelligence, an RCM product to "Build cleaner claims with insurance intelligence from verification to submission", Precheck and Voice. Pearl says it has "the only FDA-cleared AI tools that support both 2D X-rays and 3D CBCT imagery."

  • Price: not published; you book a demo. We found no pricing page and no trial.
  • Watch for: it marks up images to support your read; the diagnosis and treatment plan are still yours. Without a public price, compare quotes before you sign.

3. Overjet: x-ray AI, visit notes and an AI insurance coordinator

Overjet offers "Vision AI FDA-cleared AI for comprehensive diagnosis & patient education", Voice, "The ambient AI solution that documents, monitors, and analyzes every patient visit", and Ivy, a "New AI insurance coordinator for your front desk".

  • Price: not published; the pricing link goes to a demo booking page. No trial stated.
  • Watch for: Overjet also sells to dental insurers for utilization review, which some dentists will want to know. As with Pearl, the AI supports the dentist's read rather than replacing it.

4. Denti.AI: notes, voice perio and x-rays in one price

Denti.AI's OneStop Clinical plan includes "AI-generated dental notes", "AI voice perio charting", x-ray analysis and auto-charting for supported practice management systems, plus referral letters. Hygienists can chart perio hands-free, which helps when you have no assistant free.

  • Price: OneStop Clinical $399 a month, or billed as $3,990 a year ($333 a month), for up to 7 installs at one location with unlimited users. OneStop Clinical + is $599 a month or $5,990 a year with unlimited installs at one location. No setup fee, and 10% off your first month (Denti.AI pricing).
  • Watch for: "Some features depend on your practice management system." Check that yours is supported before you subscribe; the price is per location.

5. Bola AI: voice charting and an AI scribe

Bola AI does voice perio charting, restorative charting (it says you can "Complete the restorative chart for a patient visit in less than 2 minutes.") and an AI Scribe for clinical notes. It says it is integrated with the leading practice management systems.

  • Price: not published; you book a demo. No trial stated.
  • Watch for: Bola says its voice technology is best suited to structured tasks such as clinical exams, not free-form dictation of everything.

6. Open Dental: AI image analysis inside your practice software

If you already run Open Dental, the simplest way to add x-ray AI may be BetterDiagnostics, which "is natively integrated in the Open Dental Imaging Module." It helps identify common dental pathologies for patients 18 and above, and billing is on your Open Dental statement.

  • Price: "AI Image Analysis $149/month/location". Open Dental itself in the US is $199/month/location for the first 12 months, then $149/month/location month to month.
  • Watch for: it only helps Open Dental offices, it covers adults 18 and above, and you sign a separate BetterDiagnostics Business Associate Agreement.

7. Weave: phones and texting with AI call insights

Weave bundles VoIP phones, reminders, two-way texting, missed call texting, online scheduling and insurance verification for dental offices. Its new Call Intelligence is pitched as a way to "Easily use AI to turn more calls into more appointments".

  • Price: "starting from $199 per month"; the Pro, Elite and Ultimate plans show "Get Pricing" instead of a number. No trial stated.
  • Watch for: the page does not say which plans include Call Intelligence, so ask before you compare quotes.

8. Arini: an AI receptionist built for dentists

Arini calls itself "The leading AI receptionist for dentists". It is built to "Answer inbound calls, re-activate patients, online scheduling, and more." and says its agents work around the clock and integrate with your existing systems.

  • Price: not published; you book a demo. No trial stated.
  • Watch for: it is demo-only with no public price, and much of the site speaks to multi-location groups and DSOs, so ask what a one-location practice pays.

9. Smith.ai AI Receptionist: a free plan to start

Smith.ai's AI Receptionist offers 24/7 AI call answering with recording, transcription and summaries, call routing and AI scheduling with Calendly and similar tools.

  • Price: Free $0 a month for 25 calls ($3.00 per call after that); Pro $150 a month ($2.00 per call); Enterprise $500 a month ($1.67 per call) (Smith.ai AI Receptionist pricing).
  • Watch for: it is a general small-business tool; the page names Calendly, Clio and Zapier but no dental practice software, and does not mention HIPAA. Ask before patients' details go through it.

10. Dialzara: a low-cost AI receptionist

Dialzara answers calls, takes messages with custom questions and transfers calls, with add-ons for outbound calls, SMS and website chat.

  • Price: Business Lite $29/month for up to 60 minutes ($0.48/min over); Business Pro $99/month for 220 minutes; Business Plus $199/month for 500 minutes; Business Elite $349/month for 1000 minutes (Dialzara pricing).
  • Free trial: "7-day free trial", no contract, cancel anytime.
  • Watch for: you pay by talk minutes, so a busy recall week adds up. It is not dental-specific, and the pricing page does not mention HIPAA or dental software.

Free AI tools and trials for dentists

  • Free plan: Smith.ai AI Receptionist, 25 calls a month for $0.
  • Trials: Dialzara 7 days, Dooza Crew 7 days (card required).
  • Discount: Denti.AI offers 10% off your first month.
  • Demo only: Pearl, Overjet, Bola AI and Arini.

Patient data and HIPAA: what to ask first

Any tool that hears a patient call, reads an x-ray or writes a clinical note handles protected health information. Before you turn one on, ask the vendor for a Business Associate Agreement and keep a signed copy. Open Dental tells offices to sign one for BetterDiagnostics, and Denti.AI lists itself as HIPAA-compliant on its pricing page. The general AI receptionists we read do not mention HIPAA on their pricing pages, and Dooza Crew makes no HIPAA claim, so keep patient details out of those unless your compliance review allows them. When in doubt, start with jobs that touch no patient data at all, such as hiring, supplies and vendor paperwork.

How to choose an AI tool for your practice

  1. Start with the job that costs you most. Missed calls, charting time, insurance work, x-ray review, or the office work that piles up after hours.
  2. Check your practice management system first. Open Dental's AI only works in Open Dental; Denti.AI and Bola AI depend on supported systems; general receptionists may not connect at all.
  3. Do the math per location. Denti.AI and Open Dental price per location; Smith.ai prices per call; Dialzara by minutes; Dooza Crew is one price for the organization.
  4. Keep the dentist in charge. AI can flag a finding or draft a note; diagnosis, treatment and sign-off stay with you.
  5. Get the paperwork right. No Business Associate Agreement, no patient data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI tool for dentists?

For a small dental practice, our top pick is Dooza Crew (our product) for the back-office jobs nobody has time for, such as hiring, supply ordering and filling forms: AI employees with their own computer and browser, $49 a month for the whole organization after a 7-day free trial, and it asks before it sends anything. For x-ray analysis, look at Pearl, Overjet or, on Open Dental, its AI Image Analysis. For notes and perio charting, Denti.AI or Bola AI. For the phones, Arini is built for dentists; Smith.ai and Dialzara are general AI receptionists.

Can AI diagnose cavities on x-rays?

AI can flag possible findings, but the dentist diagnoses. Pearl, Overjet, Denti.AI and the BetterDiagnostics analysis inside Open Dental mark up radiographs, and their vendors say the tools are FDA-cleared. They support your diagnosis; they do not replace it, and treatment decisions stay with you.

How much does dental AI cost?

Prices we read on October 26, 2026: Open Dental AI Image Analysis is $149/month/location; Denti.AI OneStop Clinical is $399 a month or $3,990 a year for one location; Weave starts from $199 per month; Smith.ai AI Receptionist has a $0 plan and Pro at $150 a month; Dialzara starts at $29 a month. Pearl, Overjet, Bola AI and Arini do not publish prices. Dooza Crew is $49 a month for the whole organization.

Is there a free AI receptionist for a dental office?

Smith.ai AI Receptionist has a free plan with 25 calls a month and $3.00 per call after that. Dialzara has a 7-day free trial. Neither page we read mentions dental practice software or HIPAA, so ask before patient details go through them. Arini, built for dentists, is demo-only.

Is AI for dental notes HIPAA compliant?

Ask each vendor and get a Business Associate Agreement before any patient information goes in. Denti.AI lists itself as HIPAA-compliant on its pricing page, and Open Dental asks offices to sign a BetterDiagnostics Business Associate Agreement. Dooza Crew makes no HIPAA claim, so do not give it patient health information unless your own compliance review allows it.

Will AI replace my front desk?

Not in these tools. AI receptionists answer calls, take messages and book into a calendar, and Weave turns missed calls into texts, but your team still handles insurance questions, money and anything clinical. The practical goal is fewer missed calls and less busywork for the staff you have.
