Checked October 26, 2026. Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page. Vetspire does not publish a price, and VetRec's plan table could not be read, so we say so. Prices change: re-check before you buy. Dooza Crew is our product and our top pick for the clinic back office; we say why, and where the others fit better.

Best AI tools for veterinarians: the short answer

Our top pick for a small veterinary clinic's back office is Dooza Crew: AI employees that work the inbox, draft client reminders, fill forms and take phone calls, $49 a month for the whole organization, and it asks before it sends anything. For SOAP notes, look at an AI scribe: ScribbleVet, Scribenote (free plan), HappyDoc or VetRec. For AI inside the practice system, Shepherd or Vetspire. For a phone agent, Goodcall.

How many veterinary professionals use AI in 2026

Most of them, by one count. A benchmark study from Digitail and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), reported by dvm360, "The survey found that 83.7% of veterinary professionals now use AI, up from 39.2% in 2024, and 88.3% of users engage with it daily or weekly." It rests on "1730 self-reported responses from veterinary professionals across roles and practice types in the US and Canada between July 27 and August 12, 2026".

Read that with care. Digitail sells veterinary software, the answers are self-reported, and "professionals" are individuals rather than clinics. The direction is clear, though: AI is now an everyday tool in veterinary work, and the question for a small clinic is which jobs to hand it first.

The tools, one by one

1. Dooza Crew (our product, top pick): AI employees for the clinic back office

Crew gives a clinic AI employees, each with its own computer and browser and its own job. They work around the clock, work with your team in one chat, and pass work to each other. Before one sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject. Crew is not clinical software: it does the work around the exam room.

Some jobs you could give it, as tasks rather than promises:

  • You could give one agent the job of working the front-desk inbox: sorting appointment requests, records requests and vendor mail, and drafting replies for you to approve.
  • You could give one agent the job of drafting client reminder emails from a list you upload, which you approve before anything is sent.
  • You could give one agent the job of filling fillable PDF, Word and Excel forms you upload, such as new-client or vendor forms. Scanned PDFs without form fields cannot be filled.
  • Works in: web-based tools you log in to with a browser. You type passwords and 2FA codes yourself.
  • Phones: Crew agents take phone calls too, included in the plan.
  • Price: free for 7 days (card required), then $49 a month for the whole organization (unlimited users and agents), AI usage included with a hard spending cap. At the cap it pauses and tells you.
  • Watch for: it is not a licensed veterinarian, and no veterinary software is certified or integrated, so try it on your own tools during the trial. Diagnoses, prescriptions and medical records decisions stay with your vets.

Try Dooza Crew free for 7 days.

2. ScribbleVet: AI scribe with a clear per-vet price

ScribbleVet pitches "Fast, accurate AI-powered notes". You record on your own phone or computer, no extra equipment needed, and it offers 1-click transfer to some PIMS, including ezyVet, Pulse and Vetspire.

  • Price: Essential is "$40/mo" per user for 150 SOAP notes a month, with 100 more notes for $20. Unleashed (unlimited customizable SOAPs and templates) is $150 per DVM seat a month billed annually, or $200 billed monthly; you pay per active DVM and support staff are free.
  • Free trial: "All accounts starts with a free, 14-day trial".
  • Watch for: Essential is capped at 150 notes a month, which a busy vet can pass. Your vet reviews every note.

3. Scribenote: the scribe with a free plan

Scribenote turns speech into structured notes in SOAP and other formats, and exports to your records through PIMSPal Pro or Widget Mode. It also has Companion, which lets you ask questions about any patient.

4. HappyDoc: flat price for the whole team

HappyDoc says it is "The only veterinary AI scribe built specifically for AVImark and Cornerstone." The HappyAssistant tier adds an AI assistant called Scout.

  • Price: "Starts at $119/mo for unlimited users". Three tiers (HappyScribe, HappyAssistant, HappyAdvisor) are shown without their own prices.
  • Trial: no free trial is stated, but there is a "60-day money-back guarantee for all plans."
  • Watch for: only the starting price is public, so ask what your tier costs before you commit. A flat price for unlimited users suits a clinic with many vets and techs, less so a solo vet.

5. VetRec: scribe from $99 per vet

VetRec describes itself as an AI veterinary scribe that automates SOAP notes, medical records and clinical documentation.

  • Price: the pricing page says "Plans from $99/month per vet." Its plan table did not load for us, so we cannot list tiers.
  • Free trial: 14 days, per the page.
  • Watch for: we could only read the page summary, not the plans. Check the live pricing page before you rely on the $99.

6. Shepherd: practice software with AI built in

Shepherd is cloud-based practice management software. Its AI tools include "fully embedded transcription that logs into the record and can create discharge instructions, along with summaries of patient records".

  • Price: "Shepherd starts at $299 a month for one doctor with Shepherd Pay, or $349 without." Two doctors are $398 or $448 a month, three are $497 or $547. You pay only for doctor licenses; unlimited users, onboarding and support come standard. Data migration costs extra ($2,475 paid in full, or $230 a month).
  • Trial: none stated; you schedule a demo.
  • Watch for: it replaces your practice software, so it is a bigger decision than adding a scribe.

7. Vetspire: cloud practice software with an AI scribe and summaries

Vetspire's AI Scribe automatically records and transcribes medical conversations into the patient record's fields, and AI Summary consolidates notes and next steps from each visit. The vendor claims it can save up to 90 minutes per day with its AI and automated workflows; that is the vendor's claim, not a measured result.

  • Price: not published. The site offers a 1-hour demo.
  • Watch for: no public price and no trial, and like Shepherd it means moving your whole practice system.

8. Goodcall: an AI phone agent

Goodcall builds AI phone agents for small businesses; it is not made for veterinary clinics, so check how it handles your appointment types. "No per-minute charges." You pay for each different caller in a month, and every plan includes a local number or you can forward your own.

  • Price: Starter $79 a month for 100 unique customers (79 cents each after that); Growth $129 for 500 (26 cents each after); Scale $299 for 2,000 (15 cents each after).
  • Free trial: "Start free with a demo agent. Add a number when you're ready."
  • Watch for: it does not know your practice software, and a phone agent should hand any medical question or emergency to a person.

9. Fathom: free notes for team meetings

Fathom records and summarizes calls and meetings: "Unlimited meetings captured & instant AI summaries". Use it for staff meetings, vendor calls and practice-owner planning.

  • Price: a free plan with unlimited recordings and instant call summaries, free forever; Premium $20 a month per user; Team $19 a month per user ($15 billed annually, 2-user minimum); Business $34 ($25 annually).
  • Watch for: it is a general meeting tool, not a veterinary one. It does not write SOAP notes or your medical record, so do not use it as one.

Free AI tools and trials for veterinary clinics

  • Scribenote: a free plan with standard AI models, plus a 2-week Pro trial with no credit card.
  • Fathom: free forever for meeting notes.
  • Goodcall: a free demo agent; you pay when you connect a number.
  • Trials: ScribbleVet 14 days, VetRec 14 days, Dooza Crew 7 days (card required). HappyDoc has a 60-day money-back guarantee instead.

How to choose an AI tool for your clinic

  1. Start with the job that costs the most hours. Charting after hours, the front-desk inbox, reminders, forms or missed calls.
  2. Check your practice software first. HappyDoc is built for AVImark and Cornerstone, ScribbleVet transfers to some systems, and Shepherd and Vetspire only work if you move to them.
  3. Do the math per vet or per clinic. ScribbleVet, Scribenote and VetRec charge per vet; HappyDoc and Dooza Crew charge per organization.
  4. Keep sign-off with your vets. A vet reads, edits and signs every drafted note. Pick tools that ask before they send anything.
  5. Try before you commit. Run a week of real appointments through a free trial and count how many edits each note needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI tool for veterinarians?

It depends on the job. For the clinic back office, our top pick is Dooza Crew (our product): AI employees with their own computer and browser that handle inbox, reminders, forms and phones, for $49 a month for the whole organization after a 7-day free trial. It asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject before it sends anything. For SOAP notes, look at an AI scribe such as ScribbleVet, Scribenote, HappyDoc or VetRec.

How many veterinary professionals use AI?

A Digitail and AAHA survey of 1730 veterinary professionals in the US and Canada, run July 27 to August 12, 2026, found that 83.7% use AI, up from 39.2% in 2024. It is self-reported, and Digitail is a software vendor, so treat the number as a signal of direction rather than an exact share of clinics.

What is an AI scribe for vets, and what does it cost?

An AI scribe listens to the appointment and drafts the SOAP note for the vet to review. Scribenote has a free plan and Pro at $79 per DVM a month on yearly billing. VetRec says plans start at $99 a month per vet. ScribbleVet is $150 per DVM seat billed annually ($200 monthly). HappyDoc starts at $119 a month for unlimited users.

Can AI diagnose my patients or write prescriptions?

No tool in this list should. The scribes draft records, Shepherd and Vetspire put AI inside the practice system, and Dooza Crew is not a licensed veterinarian. Diagnoses, prescriptions and medical records decisions stay with your vets, who review and sign what the AI drafts.

Is there a free AI tool for a veterinary clinic?

Yes, in a few places. Scribenote has a free plan (standard AI models and standard transcription quality) and a 2-week Pro trial with no credit card. Fathom has a free forever plan for meeting notes. Goodcall lets you build a free demo agent and pay only when you connect a number. ScribbleVet and VetRec offer 14-day free trials; Dooza Crew is free for 7 days (card required).

Do I need to change my practice software to use AI?

Not for most tools. ScribbleVet, Scribenote and HappyDoc work alongside the system you have, with PIMS transfer tools or copy and paste, and HappyDoc is built for AVImark and Cornerstone. Shepherd and Vetspire are whole practice systems, so using their AI means switching to them.
