Checked October 26, 2026. Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page. Several legal AI tools (CoCounsel, Lexis+ with Protege, Spellbook, Smokeball) do not publish prices; we say so. Prices change: re-check before you buy. Dooza Crew is our product and our top pick for solo and small firms; we say why, and where the others fit better.
Best AI tools for law firms: the short answer
Our top pick for a solo or small firm is Dooza Crew: one AI agent for each job that eats your non-billable hours, $49 a month for the whole organization, and it asks before it sends anything. For AI legal research, look at CoCounsel Legal (Westlaw) or Lexis+ with Protege. For contracts in Word, Spellbook. If you run Clio, MyCase or Smokeball, check the AI already inside them. For call notes, Fathom has a free plan.
How many lawyers use AI in 2026
The answer depends on who is counting. Clio's Legal Trends Report 2025 says "AI adoption among legal professionals remains high: 79% use artificial intelligence in their firms." The ABA 2024 Legal Technology Survey, as reported by LawNext, counts firm tools and finds lower numbers, "with 30% of respondents now using AI technology compared to just 11% in 2023". Small practices trail big ones: "Even solo practitioners demonstrated significant adoption increases, with 18% now using AI-based tools", while among firms with 100 or more attorneys, 46% report currently using AI-based technology tools. Across professional services, Thomson Reuters says "Organization-wide use of AI in professional services almost doubled to 40% in 2026". The surveys define AI use differently, so read each on its own.

1. Dooza Crew (our product, top pick): AI employees for a small firm's non-billable work
Crew gives solo attorneys and small law firms "one AI agent for each job that eats your non-billable hours". Each has its own computer, its own browser and its own job, works around the clock, and works with you and your staff in one chat. Each one sets itself up like a new hire and passes work to the others like a real team. Before it sends an email or clicks Send, Submit or Pay, it asks you to Approve, Edit or Reject.
- What it does: it gathers, sorts, tracks and drafts. It fills fillable PDF forms, Word and Excel files you upload. Scanned PDFs without form fields cannot be filled.
- Phones: Crew agents take phone calls too, included in the plan.
- Price: free for 7 days (card required), then $49 a month for the whole organization (unlimited users and agents), AI usage included with a hard spending cap. At the cap it pauses and tells you. Cancel during the trial and you pay nothing.
- Watch for: it is not a lawyer: advice, strategy, signatures and anything filed with a court stay with your attorneys. No practice-management software is certified yet, so try it on yours during the 7-day free trial. Your duties of confidentiality and supervision do not change.

2. Clio: practice management with AI built in
Clio is practice management software with plans named Starter, Core, Signature and Elite (Elite bundles Manage and Grow).
3. CoCounsel Legal (Thomson Reuters): AI research on Westlaw
Thomson Reuters calls it "Legal AI engineered to work at the level of a senior associate" and says "CoCounsel Legal is the only AI that reasons from authoritative Westlaw content". It handles research, analysis and drafting, with cited work product.
- Price: not published (contact sales). You can request a free trial or demo; the page gives no trial length.
- Watch for: no public price, so budget a sales call before you can compare.
4. Lexis+ with Protege: AI research on LexisNexis
Formerly Lexis+ AI. LexisNexis describes it as "a legal AI solution powered by workflows for drafting, research, and analysis, delivering trusted results from authoritative LexisNexis resources."
5. Spellbook: contract drafting and review in Word
Spellbook's Word Add-In covers "review, drafting, Q&A, benchmarks, and playbooks". Its Associate is "The first AI agent that can work through multi-document legal matters, with your oversight."
6. Smokeball: practice management with Archie AI
Smokeball's plans are Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+. The Archie AI assistant is an add-on for Boost, Grow and Prosper+; Intake powered by Smokeball AI and AutoTime are included with Prosper+ (AutoTime is an add-on for Grow).
7. MyCase: practice management with 8am IQ
MyCase Pro includes the 8am IQ Writing and Document Assistant; MyCase Advanced adds the 8am IQ Case Assistant and 8am IQ Discovery Assistant (OCR). MyCase Basic lists no IQ features.
- Price: per user per month, Basic $60 ($50 billed annually), Pro $120 ($100), Advanced $150 ($130); "Save up to 16%" on annual billing. Discovery Assistant includes 5,000 pages per user per month shared across the firm, then $30 per 5,000 pages (MyCase pricing).
- Trial: "Full access. No credit card required."; a 10-day no-cost trial.
- Watch for: AI starts at the $120 tier, and discovery pages are capped with overage.
8. Smith.ai: call answering and intake
Smith.ai screens and qualifies leads, takes intake and answers 24/7, with add-ons for booking, CRM, recording and payments. Its pricing page leads with "Professional call answering by real people."
- Price: Starter $300/month for 30 calls, Basic $810 for 90 calls, Pro $2,100 for 300 calls, Enterprise custom. Extra calls are $11.50 (Starter), $10.50 (Basic) or $8.50 (Pro); 10% discount on 12-month plans (Smith.ai pricing).
- Watch for: no free trial (a 30-day money-back guarantee instead), and per-call pricing climbs fast for a busy intake line.
9. Ruby: virtual receptionists and live chat
Ruby's virtual receptionists answer calls around the clock, including after hours, and its live chat answers website visitors. It says there are no hidden setup fees.
- Price: per month, 50 minutes $250, 100 minutes $395, 200 minutes $720, 500 minutes $1,725. Chat: 10 chats $143, 30 chats $335, 50 chats $520 (Ruby pricing).
- Watch for: minute caps, no trial stated, and a human receptionist service that is not law-specific on its pricing page.
10. Fathom: free AI notes for client calls
Fathom's free plan includes "Unlimited recordings + transcriptions," and instant AI call summaries, handy for client consultations and internal case meetings.
- Price: Free forever; Premium $20/month ($16 billed annually); Team $19 per user ($15 annually, 2-user minimum); Business $34 ($25 annually); each paid plan lists a 90-day guarantee (Fathom pricing).

Free AI tools and trials for law firms
- Call notes: Fathom's free forever plan.
- Trials: MyCase 10 days (no credit card), Spellbook 7 days, Lexis+ with Protege 2 days, Clio and CoCounsel free trials (length not stated), Dooza Crew 7 days (card required).
- No free plan: Smith.ai offers a 30-day money-back guarantee instead.
How to choose an AI tool for your firm
- Start with the job that eats the most non-billable hours. Intake calls, the inbox, forms, research or contract review.
- Check your practice management software first. If you run Clio, MyCase or Smokeball, see what AI your plan includes or sells as an add-on.
- Keep legal judgment human. Pick tools that ask before they send, and check every citation and draft before it leaves the firm.
- Protect client confidences. Your duties of confidentiality and supervision apply to every AI tool, so read each vendor's data terms before you upload client files.
