The alternatives, one by one
1. ChatGPT Work: best if you also pay for ChatGPT
OpenAI says "Work is an agent designed for longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables." It replaced ChatGPT agent, and its cloud browser runs on a separate computer in the cloud, so tasks keep going after you close your laptop.
2. Microsoft Copilot Cowork: best for Microsoft 365 teams
Microsoft says "Cowork sends emails, schedules meetings, creates documents, posts in Teams, and manages your calendar. You approve each action before it happens."
- Price: The Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on starts at $18/user/mo paid yearly (was $21), and Microsoft bills Copilot Cowork "based on usage" on top (Microsoft Copilot pricing, checked October 26, 2026).
- Watch for: It is built around Microsoft 365, so it fits poorly if your work lives in Google or other web apps. See Claude Cowork vs Copilot Cowork.
3. Gemini Spark: best if you live in Google apps
Google calls Spark "your 24/7 personal AI agent". With your permission, "Spark can use your logged-in accounts and saved passwords" in Chrome, and it hands payments back to you.
- Price: Google AI Pro is $19.99/mo; Ultra starts at $99.99/mo (Google AI plans, checked October 26, 2026).
- Watch for: The Chrome browsing feature started in the US only, and one r/GeminiAI user called Spark's cloud environment "too barebones" for heavier work.
4. Manus: a hosted all-rounder
Manus does research, websites and slides end to end. Its cloud browser can visit sites, click buttons and fill forms, and you can log into your own accounts in it. Every paid plan allows 20 tasks at once and 20 scheduled tasks.
- Price: $20/mo for 4,000 credits, $40 for 8,000, $200 for 40,000, plus 300 refresh credits a day; save 17% yearly (Manus pricing, checked October 26, 2026).
- Watch for: Credits per task are not published. More detail: Manus vs Claude Cowork.
5. Genspark: an AI employee that can run on your own machine
Genspark's Claw is "your first AI employee". It runs on a dedicated cloud computer, or locally through the desktop app with no Cloud Computer subscription, which suits people who miss local Cowork.
- Price: Free plan with 100 credits a day up to a lifetime limit; Plus $24.99/mo ($19.99 billed yearly); Pro $249.99/mo; Team $40/seat/mo (Genspark help center, checked October 26, 2026).
- Watch for: The 24/7 cloud version needs a separate Cloud Computer subscription whose price is not on the help page. See Genspark vs Claude Cowork.
6. Perplexity Computer and Comet: best for research
Comet is Perplexity's AI browser, "the browser that works for you", on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Perplexity says Computer "creates personalized apps, tools, docs, and more".
- Price: Pro is $17/mo billed yearly; Max is $167/mo billed yearly (Perplexity Pro, checked October 26, 2026).
- Watch for: Computer runs on credits, and the bonus credits on the pricing page are a limited-time offer.
7. Grok Bot: always-on bots with their own computer
xAI says "Bots have their own computer." They sign into your tools and "only come back when something needs your approval."
- Price: Grok Bot is included from Premium at $30/mo; Super is $100/mo and Ultra $200/mo (xAI pricing, checked October 26, 2026).
- Watch for: xAI still calls Grok Bot a beta, and the pricing page shows usage as multiples of Plus, not a task count.
8. OpenWork, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent: free and on your own machine
OpenWork calls itself "The open-source alternative to Claude Cowork". OpenClaw (MIT) runs on your own computer and answers in WhatsApp, Slack, Telegram and 20+ more apps. Hermes Agent (MIT) has memory and a built-in scheduler.
- Price: Free software. You pay for the AI model and wherever you run it.
- Watch for: Setup, security, updates and model bills are on you; check OpenWork's license file before business use. See Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw.
Muse is "a personal AI agent" that runs on a dedicated secure computer with its own browser. You talk to it in the Muse app or in WhatsApp.
- Price: Meta says it is free for most of what people need, with paid plans on top.
- Watch for: Rolling out in the US only, and built for one person, not a team or work files.
10. Dooza Crew (our product): a team of agents for a small business
You tell Dooza, your master agent, the job in plain words from the web or your phone; it plans it, builds the helper agents it needs (a researcher, a writer, an outreach agent) and reports back. Each agent has its own computer and browser in a private, isolated workspace; you watch every step live in chat.
- Price: Free for 7 days (card required), then $49/mo per organization (unlimited users and agents) with AI usage included and a hard spending cap. Cancel before day 8 and you pay nothing.
- Watch for: Its agents work on their own computers in an isolated workspace, not in the folders on your computer. If you want an agent inside your local folders, Claude or the self-hosted tools above fit better.

Free and local Claude Cowork alternatives
- For chat and quick research: the free plans of Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT (Cowork itself needs a paid Claude plan).
- For an agent on your own computer: OpenWork, OpenClaw or Hermes Agent; budget for the AI model. Genspark Claw's desktop app also runs locally, on Genspark credits.
- For a free hosted agent: Meta Muse (US) or Genspark's free credits.
How to test a Claude Cowork replacement in one afternoon
- Run the same 3 tasks in each tool: one report or deck in your usual style, one research question you already know the answer to, and one "clean this spreadsheet and chart it" job.
- Check where your files go. Note whether the tool works on your computer, in its cloud, or both.
- Price it per finished task, not per plan. Note how much usage or how many credits each task took.
- Look for a spending cap and approvals. Check what the agent does before it sends, books or pays.
