What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in search engine results so people click through to your site. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps your brand get mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews.
SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes for a sentence inside a synthesized answer. The foundations overlap heavily (crawlable pages, useful content, authority), but GEO adds new priorities: extractable answers, citable facts, and what other sites say about you.
Most businesses need both in 2026. The efficient way is one workflow that satisfies both, which is exactly what Dooza Ranky, Dooza's AI Visibility & Growth Employee, is built to do.
- SEO goal: rank a page, earn the click.
- GEO goal: be named, recommended, and cited in the answer.
- Shared base: technical health, helpful content, authority signals.
- GEO extras: direct-answer formatting, statistics and quotes with sources, third-party mentions, AI crawler access.
What are SEO and GEO?
SEO is the practice of improving a website so search engines such as Google and Bing crawl it, understand it, and rank it for relevant queries. Success is measured in rankings, impressions, clicks, and conversions.
GEO is the practice of improving how generative AI systems represent your brand. The term was formalized in the 2023 Princeton-led paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", which found that content changes such as adding citations, quotations, and statistics could boost a source's visibility in generative engine responses by up to roughly 40% in their benchmark.
You will also hear AEO (answer engine optimization), LLM SEO, and AI search optimization. They describe the same goal with slightly different emphasis. Our full guide on what generative engine optimization is covers the terminology in depth.
GEO vs SEO: side-by-side comparison
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
| Where you appear | Ranked list of links (the SERP) | Inside a generated answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, AI Overviews |
| Unit of success | A ranking position and a click | A mention, a recommendation, or a cited URL |
| What the system evaluates | Pages, relevance, links, experience signals | Passages and facts it can extract and trust, plus consensus across sources |
| Query style | Short keywords (2–4 words) | Long conversational prompts and follow-ups |
| Off-site signal | Backlinks | Brand mentions, reviews, Reddit/Quora threads, listicles, citations |
| Content format | Keyword-targeted pages | Direct answers, tables, statistics with sources, FAQs |
| Key metrics | Rankings, impressions, CTR, organic traffic | Share of voice, citations, mention rate, sentiment, AI referral traffic |
| Main tools | Google Search Console, Semrush, Ahrefs | Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, plus execution tools like Dooza Ranky |
| Volatility | Moves with algorithm updates | Answers vary by prompt, model, and session; track trends, not single answers |
How does ranking differ from being cited?
How SEO ranking works
A search engine crawls pages, indexes them, and for each query orders a list of results by relevance and quality. The user chooses which link to click. Your job is to be high enough in that list and compelling enough to earn the click.
How GEO citation works
An answer engine takes a prompt, often runs one or more web searches behind the scenes, retrieves passages from several sources, and writes a single answer. It may name brands, link sources, or both. The user often never clicks.
That changes the competition. You are not competing to be the best page. You are competing to be the most extractable, most corroborated source for a specific claim. A clear sentence such as "Ranky is Dooza's AI Visibility & Growth Employee, priced from $49/mo" is easier to cite than a vague paragraph about "cutting-edge growth solutions."
Many answer engines still rely on a traditional search index for retrieval. Google says its AI features draw on the same fundamentals as Search and require no special markup (see Google's AI features documentation). That is why strong SEO remains the entry ticket for GEO.
Where do GEO and SEO overlap?
Roughly speaking, good SEO is the floor for GEO. These practices help both:
- Crawlability. Pages must be reachable, fast, and server-rendered. For GEO, also allow AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot in robots.txt.
- Helpful, original content. Both systems reward pages that genuinely answer the question.
- Structured data. Schema markup (Organization, Product, Article, FAQPage) makes entities and facts clear.
- Authority. Backlinks for SEO and mentions for GEO both come from being referenced by trusted sites.
- Internal linking. Clear topical clusters help crawlers and models understand what you are about.
What changes when you add GEO?
GEO does not replace SEO. It shifts emphasis in five places:
- Answer first. Put a direct, quotable answer in the first 100–150 words of a page, then expand.
- Citable facts. Add specific numbers, named sources, and quotations. The Princeton GEO study found these among the most effective tactics, while keyword stuffing performed poorly.
- Structure for extraction. Question-style headings, comparison tables, numbered steps, and FAQ blocks are easy for models to lift.
- Off-site consensus. AI answers reflect what many sources agree on. Reviews, comparison listicles, Reddit and Quora threads, directories, and consistent name/address/phone data carry more weight.
- Prompt-level targeting. Instead of one keyword per page, map the conversational prompts buyers ask, such as "best CRM for a 10-person roofing company," and make sure a page answers each one.
Do you need both GEO and SEO?
Yes, for almost every business that relies on being found online. Here is why:
- Google still drives most search demand, and AI Overviews now appear inside Google results, so SEO and GEO meet on the same page.
- Buyers increasingly research in ChatGPT and Perplexity before they ever search a brand name. If you are absent from those answers, you are absent from the shortlist.
- The work compounds. A well-structured, well-sourced page tends to rank better and get cited more.
The practical question is not "GEO or SEO" but "who does the extra work?" For lean teams, the answer should be one workflow, not two agencies.
| Your situation | Priority |
| New site, little traffic | SEO foundations first, written in GEO format from day one |
| Established rankings, weak AI presence | GEO: restructure top pages, build third-party mentions |
| Local business | Both: Google Business Profile, consistent NAP, reviews, and FAQ content |
| B2B SaaS or services | Both: comparison pages, pricing clarity, listicle and Reddit presence |
| Enterprise brand | Both, plus a monitoring platform such as Profound for share of voice across engines |
GEO + SEO action checklist
- Confirm robots.txt allows Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot.
- Add Organization, Product or Service, Article, and FAQPage schema to key pages.
- Rewrite your top 10 pages to open with a direct answer and a quick-summary list.
- Add at least one comparison table and one sourced statistic per strategic page.
- Create pages for high-intent prompts: pricing, alternatives, "best X for Y," and "X vs Y."
- Publish an
llms.txt file that points AI systems to your most important pages.
- Get listed and reviewed on the third-party sites that answer engines cite in your category.
- Participate genuinely in Reddit and Quora threads where your buyers ask questions.
- Keep your name, address, phone, and pricing consistent everywhere.
- Track 20–50 buyer prompts monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews.

What does a page optimized for both GEO and SEO look like?
Take a local plumbing company targeting "emergency plumber cost in Austin." A page written only for classic SEO might repeat the keyword, add a stock photo, and push a phone number. A page written for SEO and GEO together would look like this:
- H1 matching the query: "How much does an emergency plumber cost in Austin?"
- Direct answer in the first paragraph: the company's actual call-out fee and typical price ranges for common jobs, stated plainly.
- A table of common emergency jobs (burst pipe, water heater failure, sewer backup) with typical price ranges and response times.
- Sourced context, such as a link to the city's permit requirements or a licensing board, so the page is verifiable.
- An FAQ block answering follow-ups: after-hours surcharges, whether estimates are free, and service areas.
- LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema, plus the same name, address, and phone as the Google Business Profile.
- Off-site support: reviews on Google and Yelp that mention fast emergency response, and an honest answer in the local subreddit when someone asks for recommendations.
That page can rank in Google, appear in an AI Overview, and give ChatGPT or Perplexity a clean, quotable fact to cite. One piece of work, two channels. This is the core efficiency argument for treating GEO and SEO as one program rather than two.
How do you measure GEO vs SEO?
SEO measurement is mature: Google Search Console, rank trackers, and analytics show rankings, clicks, and conversions.
GEO measurement is newer. The main metrics, popularized by platforms such as Profound, are:
- Share of voice — how often your brand appears in answers for a prompt set versus competitors.
- Citations — which of your URLs answer engines link to.
- Sentiment and position — whether you are recommended first, listed neutrally, or described negatively.
- AI referral traffic — sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and similar referrers in your analytics.
- Agent Analytics — AI crawler visits to your site.
